About

History

Community Living, Inc. was incorporated in 1970 by four individuals who had a vision about providing much needed services to adults with developmental disabilities. At that time institutional care was often the only out of home placement alternative for individuals and their families. Two of the owners had worked in private residential schools and saw a specific need for adult residential services. Two of the four original owners, Jerald Gross and Willard Lienneman, still own Community Living today.

The first residents moved into Cottage #1 in Victoria, MN in 1971. The first female resident to move in still calls Community Living her home today. The homes were built on land purchased from a local farmer. The city of Victoria has grown and Community Living has become part of the community.  Three additional homes were added over the next few years for a total of 4 homes in Victoria serving 41 residents.  Services were then expanded in 1973 to the city of Coon Rapids where 24 residents live in 2 homes. In 1993 Community Living opened Seventh Place in Blaine. Seventh Place is a smaller home serving 4 residents.

Mission

The philosophy of Community Living is indicative of its name. We strive to provide individualized services to people in a home setting within their community. Residents are supported in a growth process so that they can become as independent as possible. We have a strong focus on resident choice, community integration, and active involvement. Community Living is committed to ready, open, and honest, communication with residents and their families.

Community Living has always had a strong commitment to lifelong service. Our residents really do see Community Living as home. Many residents who moved into our homes in the 70′s are still living with us today. We are also proud of the length of service of our staff. In an industry where staff turnover and retention is challenging Community Living has employees in direct service to the company for 5, 10, and 20+ years.  In addition our leadership team is comprised of individuals who have been with the company for for up to 35 years.

In 1970, Community Living President and part owner, Jerald Gross wrote when commenting on our mission “Our sincerity is our offer; our faith is our direction; your trust is our success.” This sentiment still resounds today.
